The project assigned was to create a graphic novel biography based on a person no books are dedicated to so far.
Women have been fighting gender bias for centuries, underpaid, unrepresented and unrecognized, they have still managed to change the world in their own ways. Still, there stand a few shining beacons who paved the way for others. One of such beautiful beacons for the field of Science in India was Kamala Sohonie.
I heard of her story from close friend who is a student in the field of science. They found her inspiring and urged me to read up about them and after learning about the woman myself, I decided that she would be a good subject for this novel. The cover is designed with an olive green and ochre color scheme signifying the subject’s down to earth roots. The background sketch is of toddy palm which is the source of her groundbreaking work on “Neera”, a nutritional supplement for malnourished children and pregnant women.
The title of the book is simply “Kamala Sohonie, Phd”. The intent was to emphasize her entire life journey and how she received the achievements in her life that were previously unknown to the women of our country.
